Welcome to our Crisis Management and Human Behaviour elearning course where you will learn about the regulations and guidance that are in place in the event of an emergency onboard. You will learn how the response to an emergency is controlled, including the control passengers and personnel during emergencies, and the importance of clear communications during a crisis.

Learning outcomes are shown below:

Module 1 Outcome 1: The learner understands the importance of shipboard emergency procedures and knows how to organise them.
LO1 1.1 Explain the concept of how specific ship design and layout may impact on the management of emergency procedures
LO2 1.2 State what the safety regulations cover
LO3 1.3 Describe shipboard emergency plans and procedures
LO4 1.4 Explain the need for pre-planning and drills of emergency procedures and the need for all personnel to be aware of and adhere to pre-planned procedures
LO5 1.5 Explain the importance of debriefing following drills, including lessons learnt from case studies

Module 2 Outcome 2: The learner is able to control the response to emergencies on board
LO6 2.1 Describe how to deal with an identified emergency situation
LO7 2.2 Identify any shortfall in the available resources and determine relevant contingency measures
LO8 2.3 Describe appropriate and effective leadership skills to deal with the identified emergency, including:
i. Setting an example
ii. Decision making
iii. Motivation and encouragement of crew
iv. Reassurance of passengers and other personnel

Module 3 Outcome 3: The learner is able to control passengers and other personnel during emergency situations
LO9 3.1 Identify the typical symptoms of stress in passengers, crew and self during an emergency situation
LO10 3.2 Explain how stress can affect the performance of individuals
LO11 3.3 Explain that the reactions and behaviours of passengers and other shipboard personnel may include:
• A delay in accepting that an emergency situation exists
• Symptoms of panic and irrational behaviour
• Impaired comprehension and lack of response to instructions
• Searching for other and/or belongings
• Seeking safety/refuge in cabins/other perceived safe places
• Moving to upperside of ship if listing

Module 4 Outcome 4: The learner is able to establish and maintain effective communications during an emergency situation
LO12 4.1 Explain the importance of giving clear and concise instructions and reports
LO13 4.2 Give clear, precise instructions, direction and guidance to passengers, crew and other personnel, taking account of language barriers and other relevant issues
LO14 4.3 Identify passenger and crew issues and concerns about the emergency situation
LO15 4.4 Provide relevant information and appropriate response to passenger and crew issues and concerns, taking account of:
• Non-verbal means of communication, e.g. by demonstration; use of hand signals; location of instructions, muster stations, life-saving devices and evacuation routes
• Emergency announcements
